Our 18 Holes and Counting golf blog started because we wanted to keep track of all the wonderful golf courses we have played over the years. We have played at golf clubs with 9, 18, 27 and 36 holes. However, a standard “round of golf” at most golf clubs / courses involves 18 holes. Which led us to ask ourselves “Why 18 Holes on a golf course?”
Our research proved there is a good reason.
The Old Course at St Andrews was where it all started, with just 12 holes. Golfers used to finish their round and then play it in reverse – cutting out two of the holes – thus playing a 22-Hole round. Then, in 1764, the chaps from St Andrews decided that the first 4 holes were too short and so these were turned into 2 holes. Take off 2 holes going out and 2 going in and you have 18 holes.
And where St Andrews led, all other Golf courses everywhere else in the world followed.
We decided to call our blog 18 Holes and Counting because we didn’t stop at our first 18 holes. Below is the list of where we have played thus far. We are on a continuous quest to play as many courses as we can as we spread the word about how fun and enjoyable this game is! This is a “living list” and as we play new courses we will continue to update our list.
