18 Holes and Counting!

Our Love Affair with Golf!

The Katy Golf Club Review

We had to have some work done on “Big Dee” – our HDT. That put us in a little town called Parsons, Kansas. We have been here before and we will be here again.

What made this trip different is that we found a little 9 hole golf course – The Katy Golf Club.

Kathy did a little research on the course and found that it was established 1926. That alone got our juices going. I love to find old courses.

As was with most of the nation, the 1920’s was a time of general prosperity. Parsons has always been a railroad town. It was the Katy Railroad that initially opened the golf course with 150 chartered members in 1926. The golf course operated as member association until 2014, where at that time the organization was converted to a private ownership.

The tee box markers are trains – honoring the course’s railroad history.

The Katy Golf Club is now operated and owned by Jeff Perez, who started playing golf in his 30s. Jeff is committed to keeping the Katy Golf club deeply rooted in its golf culture and railroad heritage.

Jeff Perez – The Katy Golf Club owner.

Jeff has turned this 9-hole course into a 18-hole course by using two sets of tee boxes. There is enough difference between the boxes that you feel like you are playing a different hole on your second round. At the same time, because you are playing the hole again, there is a familiar feeling to the hole. That helps when you are playing the course for the first time.

I have often played a course and thought I would love to play it again so I would know how to play the hole better.

The Katy Golf Club is a fun course to play. There are holes that beg you to grip it and rip it and others that demand a thoughtful placement of the golfball.

There is not much sand or water. The challenge comes in the form of trees and small, fast greens. And you know how I love trees.

The Katy Golf Club makes great use of the large trees. It makes the course seem a little narrower than it is…. making you concentrate on getting the ball in the fairway.

But, because most of the trees are old giants, there didn’t seem to be much trouble getting out of them if you found your way into them.

And I did find my way into them a few times.

Jeff was very informative and proud of his course. He was especially proud of the junior golf league his course hosts weekly. Trying to teach a new generation the finer points of golf.

Jeff & Gene making our burgers

He also has one of the best little burger joints in the area, located right in the clubhouse.

The Katy Golf Club may not be a PGA quality course. But, it is a great little getaway for a round of golf. We loved it. Kathy and I will be in the area at least once a year, and the Katy Golf Club will be where you will find us.

This is a strong Par course for us.

There is something a little extra special about talking with the owner of a golf course. Especially when he just wants you to enjoy your day with a no pressure round of golf.

If you find yourself in Parsons, Kansas play the Katy Golf Club. It will be fun and there is a great burger waiting for you at the end of your round!
