Our Love Affair with Golf!

“My Golf Game in Photos”

We recently purchased one of those digital photo frames. You know the ones – it’s about the size and shape of an ordinary picture frame, displays multiple photos in a slideshow format, and connects to the internet to download new pictures to display on the screen.

OMG – IT’S THE BEST!!

I LOVE to sit and watch it: Sometimes, when I have a quiet moment, I just sit at the kitchen table and watch my digital photo frame flip through the pictures of my loved ones, all the places we have traveled, the courses we have played, and the wonderful golfers we have met along the way.

I find it enjoyable and almost meditative.

When digital photography first started I really appreciated the freedom of no longer needing to buy and develop film. With digital photography I had the ability to take as many pictures as I wanted and keep only the best.

And editing the pictures was even better – getting the image just the way I wanted – my OCD personality loved it!

However…the down side to my digital camera was the limited storage capacity which meant my images left my camera or stayed on the hard drive.

That’s not the case with the my digital photo frame.

Documenting my golf experiences is something I enjoy. The pictures I take while playing golf do several things for me:

  1. They help me hold on to memories of the games I have played. From the crazy rainy round in Jakarta, Indonesia to that very special game at the Old Course, St. Andrews celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary. My photos have captured my golf memories.
  2. They tell a story of my round. My golf images have a unique ability to transport me to another place and time. They are there to show to my friends and family – weather they are interested or not – as I share the tale of my latest round of golf.
  3. They help me to see the game differently. Taking pictures while playing golf has taught me to constantly take in my surroundings. I look for the unique and beautiful moments during the round. Nothing is too mundane to be beautiful – sometimes you just have to look for it.
  4. They let me express myself. A picture is truly worth a thousand words. What I can’t explain in words, I can show through photos.

For as long as I can remember, I have loved pictures. When I was little, I would spend hours pouring over old family photo albums, memorizing the framed pictures around the house, and eventually taking my own pictures.

While traveling to Alaska this past spring (to golf of course), I made sure to take a daily picture of the four of us. Sure there were days that everyone was groaning and moaning about having to stop a whole five or six seconds for a snapshot, but what resulted is well over 70 pictures of us smiling, posing, mugging and laughing during our awesome road trip.

And that – well that is priceless!

I have a belief that the purpose of photography and the act of taking a picture is to capture a moment in time, be it a person, a place, or an object. Each captured image has the potential to carry its own unique feeling through time, and bring me back with happiness and wonder, to the origins of that moment.

Every second that I live is a second more in the past. Every picture that is taken captures those split seconds and stores them timelessly. Pictures are a chart of memories and moments that can be revisited as they were when the image is viewed.

If a picture wasn’t taken, some precious memories would be lost forever.

My smart phone makes it easier than ever before to photograph every minute of my life and I still get that question: “Why do you take pictures?”

My answer?

Because I love it!

Time goes by quickly, and it’s not always easy to live in the moment. Taking photos enables me to hold on to those moments just a little bit longer.

Besides – pictures are not only for preserving my memories, but also for showing others how I see the world.
