Stonebrook Golf Course Review

Last week a friend of mine asked me Have you played Stonebrook golf course? What did you think of it?… I had no idea what course he was talking about… I immediately looked up Stonebrook on the internet and started researching what they had to offer.

Stonebrook is set in a housing community… it is easy to get too. Courses that are in this type of setting are not my favorite. I find that the houses surrounding the course sometimes take over the landscape. If you have read my past blogs you know that part of what I love about golf is the nature. Stonebrook has done a good job of mixing nature and housing. There are a lot of nice looking houses… not so close to the course. You don’t feel like a bad shot is going to break someone’s window. There is a good amount of old trees that line the course shielding the houses and making you feel the maturity of the course. Kathy and I played Stonebrook a little early in the season. None of the trees were in their full leaf glory. I am sure in about six weeks Stonebrook will look like a different course with the large trees fully bloomed.

When you enter the clubhouse you can see the small pro shop has just enough to get you playing golf. It is not a shoppers playground. They do however have a small selection of golfing supplies. The staff was very helpful and ready to get us out on the course.

Stonebrook’s layout is nice. No real surprises. There are bunkers and water throughout the course to increase the difficulty. There are six sets of tee boxes to satisfy almost all handicap levels. The only boxes that were missing were the blacks. In most cases black tee boxes are not necessary anyway.

The grounds crew were working on the bunkers… trying to improve the drainage. I am sure when they are completed the work will only make them better and less compacted after a hard Florida rain.

I can’t see much that I would change with this course. I liked the feel and quality of the entire course. The tee boxes, fairways and greens were all in good shape even though it is still a little early for good strong grass. There are holes that require a bit of skill to play… and a few holes that you can just swing away.

The water hazards that are on the course are there to make you think about your plan but not so intense that you have to alter your play to avoid them. A bad shot could end up in the drink… However… you don’t have to purposely avoid playing towards or over the water.

I will play this course again… I give Stonebrook an overall strong par. I am sure later in the season when all the trees are in full bloom, I would rate Stonebrook a little better. If you are anywhere close to Stonebrook and are looking for a nice round of golf, go. You will not be disappointed.
