Herndon Centennial Golf Course Review

I have played this course a few times over the past 15 years and there are a few things that have stood out every time I’ve played. I will start with the clubhouse and the people that get you on the course. It is a small clubhouse that has everything you need to play your round of golf. It is not a clubhouse that you go to for shopping or looking to improve your golfing wardrobe. There is a small selection of what you need, with an emphasis on small. Most of the staff have been there for a long time. I seem to remember seeing a couple of them every time I visit. You would think that is a good thing. But, I feel like if they don’t know you, they are just going to take your money and get you on the course. Don’t get me wrong, they are nice. I just get the feeling of being an outsider more than a guest.

The clubhouse, practice area and course are all very close to each other. Just a few steps out of the clubhouse and you are on the putting green. It is also small but in great shape, and it is cut just like the rest of the greens on the course. Step off the practice green a few more steps and you are on the driving range. Again, it is small but you can use all of your clubs and get a good warm up.

Centennial is a certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. The age of the course, mixed with the layout, turns this course into a little gem. If you have read any of my previous reviews, you know I place a lot of joy and appreciation on the natural layout and feel of the course. Centennial never lets me down. It is beautiful every step of the round.

The first tee is just a minute or two from the practice area. That is where the beauty of this course begins. As with everything else, the tee boxes are small. That doesn’t seem to matter because they are always in great condition. They are a perfect welcome mat to beautiful fairways. The grass is a deep green with very few divots. The course ungulates through old trees, streams and natural wooded areas. You never feel like the city is right across the street.

As you approach the greens there is nothing tricky about them. The sand that is on the course isn’t high quality and the traps are usually littered with leaves and small branches. But, get your ball on the green and they roll true. You will be able to get a few more one putts than normal and if you three putt it is your aim, not the greens.

Be sure to check the prices for the time you are playing. They will vary depending on when you are playing. They charge more on Friday through Sunday. Making it a little less of a deal to play.

Every time I have visited Herndon, I have played this course. And I am sure that I will continue the tradition every time I go back. If you need a break from the everyday hustle and want to feel like you are out of the city, Play Herndon Centennial Golf Course. I am giving this course an overall par. However, if I were only considering the playing area I would give it a birdie. I always enjoy this course and I am sure you will too.
