18 Holes and Counting!

Our Love Affair with Golf!

Cimarron National Golf Club Review

We did it! We checked another state off our Golf Bucket List to golf in all 50 states. This time it was Oklahoma and the course we played was Cimarron National Golf Club in Guthrie, Oklahoma.

We found this little gem through our Harvest Hosts membership.

And a gem it is – a gem rich in golfing history.

Cimarron National Golf Club is owned and operated by the Duffy Martin family.

Duffy Martin was a PGA professional golfer and a 60 year PGA member, who died at the age of 98, but his legacy of commitment to the average golfer is what we at 18 Holes and Counting want everyone to think of when they play this game.

When talking with the staff at Cimarron National, we were told that Duffy Martin figured out a long time ago that the worst thing about golf is looking for your ball. It’s too time-consuming. It’s too frustrating and more times than not just plain fruitless. (Oh don’t we know that!?!)

So Martin built courses for the average golfer! (I believe he was thinking about me!)

Duffy Martin believed that golf ought to be fun. Who doesn’t agree with that?

We easily found Cimarron National Golf Club on our Garmin for RVs. After we got Big Dee and Dee all set up, we checked in to see about a tee time.

Mark, the Pro shop attendant, was able to set us up with a twilight tee-off time and Rich gave us a full run down of the course conditions – what to watch out for and what holes would be an easy drive for the greens.

They explained there are actually two eighteen-hole championship golf courses to choose from – Cimarron National on the East side of the clubhouse and Aqua Canyon on the west side. They allow walkers seven days a week and groups of five Monday through Friday (no weekends or holidays) on both courses – AND they take tee times up to two weeks in advance. (Try booking tee times that early in south Florida and see how you do!)

Rich told us that although both of the courses provide a great golfing experience for all skill levels, Cimarron National is the more challenging golfing experience of the two.

Since we are always looking for a challenge – Cimarron National was the choice for us!

No bunkers or sand traps on this course. We were told that Duffy Martin designed courses don’t have sand traps because they’re hard to maintain and hard to hit out of. (We say Preach It!) We also noticed there was no rough or killer tall grass to worry about, because Duffy said the pros are playing elsewhere. (Again – We say Preach It!)

Even though there were no bunkers or tall grass, the track wasn’t easy to score on, but it was easy to play on. And as a recreational golfer, that is EXACTLY what I am looking for when I play a round of golf.

I just want to enjoy a few hours on the course.

This course is reasonably priced. After paying crazy high prices for a round in central Florida a few weeks ago, it’s refreshing to pay green fees that won’t break my bank account.

Unfortunately the winter frost did some serious damage to the fairways and the recovery is going to be slow. Although the course is open year round, it is still early spring, so time will be a great healer.

The trees along the fairways were majestic and mature in their beauty, and there was plenty of water to test our skills. We found the greens to be in great shape.

The course layout is what really made this course fun to play.

Once we finished the round, we were able to return our golf cart and then settle in for a beer at our RV in the parking lot. Not sure life can get much better than that.

We certainly agree with Duffy’s philosophy on golfing:

“People would rather hit ’em than hunt ’em. Life is too short to hunt for golf balls.”

If you are in the Guthrie, Oklahoma area and want to play some golf, I recommend you play Cimarron National Golf Club.  Based on our score card rating – I would rate this a Par Course with a potential to be a Birdie Course when the fairways grow back.
