Highland Springs Golf Course Review

There are some places you go that everything seems to line up to be just awesome. And to be honest – I think that having a positive outlook in life helps in making these places show up more frequently.

Kathy and I found such a place the other afternoon. Highland Springs Golf Course was a great find, and the owner and staff only made it better!

As part of our RVing life we belong to Harvest Hosts. Harvest Host find businesses that will offer their facilities to campers for a unique overnight stay at their establishment with no camping fees. In exchange every Harvest Host member is encouraged to support the hosts and their business while you are there. It is a great way to go from one campground to another when it takes more than one day to get there, and you aren’t looking to stay more than one night in a single location. Harvest Host has added golf courses to their list of hosts – bonus for us!

Kathy did some research on Harvest Host and found Highland Springs Golf Course in Wellsburg, West Virginia. We decided to give it a try.

We called and the owner – Mark Hone – answered the phone. He was very excited to have us for the evening. We were going to be his first RVers staying at the course.

When we pulled into the parking lot with our Luxe 5th Wheel Toy Hauler, (whom we affectionately call Dee 2.0), Mark greeted us with a big smile and a hearty hello! He gave us a brief history of the course and got us a golf cart right away so we could get around the facility while we stayed the night.

Of course we told him we wanted to get out on the course and play 9 holes!

As we were getting ready we noticed the course was just gorgeous – set in the rolling hills of West Virginia with beautiful trees and lush grass. We were getting excited and ready to play. We got to the clubhouse and Mark briefed us on the course.

The coolest thing that stuck out for us was the 10th hole – where you tee off in West Virginia and putt out in Pennsylvania!

It was a long par 5 with a gentle down slope to the center of the fairway then a rise to the green.

It was a great start – pars all around!

As we played, the course just kept giving us beautiful views of the landscape. It was the type of landscape that pictures just don’t do it justice. Surprisingly enough the course didn’t seem that hard. Sometimes when I play a course this captivating I play well and don’t even notice. I think it is because I am distracted from the difficulty of the course and just put the ball out there.

Kathy was enjoying the round too and on the 15th hole she carded her first Eagle on the par 5! I am pretty sure everyone on the course heard her hoop and hollar with excitement.

Just when we thought the magic was over, we got to the clubhouse and Mark was waiting for us to see what we thought of his gem of a course. He invited us to join the small golfing group that had finished up their weekly league play. He offered us dinner and drink to enjoy with the course regulars.

Of course we accepted the offer and joined in. We started visiting with the group – they were all so welcoming. They wanted to know about our adventures and share their stories with us as well.

We chatted with fellow golfers who were happy, kind and genuine.

Before we knew it 3 hours had passed and we were exhausted. We made our way back to Dee 2.0 (our RV) and fell into bed talking about what a great experience the evening was.

We were so happy that we found Highland Springs Golf Course and made it a part of our trip!

We can’t wait to make it back to West Virginia and play a full round at Highland Springs Golf Course. I am sure Mark and his family would make it a great time again.
