18 Holes and Counting!

Our Love Affair with Golf!

“Golf Books”

I like to read. I find myself reading all the time – books, magazine, news articles, blogs – you name it! And the topics are all over the place. From fiction to non-fiction. Filthy, frothy novels to true crimes. Self help and exercise …. and of course GOLF.

My “Go-To” book for all things Golf!

And believe me, I have read my share of golf books!!

You are probably thinking why would I read a golf book – after all golf is a hands-on activity and not an intellectual or theoretical one.

OK – yes, I agree that the best way to get better at golf is to play. Nothing teaches like experience in my book! (haha – get it?)

However, I am not one who naturally gravitates toward finding effective solutions via my golf swing, so reading a few quality golf books can be both a pleasurable pastime and a useful thing to do.

Keep this one in my golf bag for quick reference when playing!

I believe reading the right golf books will give me insights on how to think about the game, what is the proper form, and how to apply course management. Because knowing “WHY” I do the things I do in my golf game is just as important as actually swinging the club.

A few golf books I have read over the years are:

  • “A Good Walk Spoiled” by John Feinstein
  • “The Greatest Game Ever Played” by Mark Frost
  • “Ben Hogan’s Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf” by Ben Hogan

Each of these books have brought me closer to understanding the history, beauty and attraction of the game. I have read about the many people that are fascinated by the feeling of elegance and finesse surrounding this sport.

Light Reading!
Golf & Life!

Did you know that golf is one of the oldest sports in the world, having been practiced uninterruptedly for at least 6 centuries? I read that in a book!!

Of course, nowadays it has become known for its etiquette and its peculiar dress code. Moreover, its world’s tournaments are sponsored by some of the most famous luxury brands in the world –  Rolex, BMW, and Emirates – and played in the most exclusive and spectacular venues in the world.

But I don’t just read books to help my golf game. I also read books:

  • To travel without taking a step
  • To teach me to be better
  • To expand my imagination
  • To help me find out who I am
  • To bring me joy

I find that books carry a whole world within them. I believe like people, each book has a personality. Reading a good book is like making a new friend – understanding their journey, and experiencing a different view of the world.

And I will let you in on a little secret – I much prefer hard-copy books over e-books. Which is a problem in our current RV lifestyle due to our limited space! But even with limited space, I still try my best to read at least 5-10 pages from a book daily.

To help with the limited space I have added a “Little Free Library” to our travel baggage!

My Little Free Library on “Big Dee”

You know the – “Take a Book, Share a Book library”.

My goal is to get RVers to read more, one RV Park at a time!

It has been a blast watching my Little Free Library grow. It is bringing RVers of all ages together.

The welcome sign!

On the front door of my “Little Free Library” you will find a note, welcoming visitors and explaining how the library works. Inside are books of every type, size and genre – novels, young adult reads, children’s books, cook books, self-help manuals, you name it. A book for every type of reader, free for the taking. And hopefully encouraging the reader to return the same book or bring a different one from their RV. Or both.

Plenty of room!

But let’s face it: It can be challenging to motivate ourselves to read a 382-page book when we can watch the movie, listen to the audiobook, or watch a YouTube video summary instead.

Am I right?

Once it registered with me that most of my daily reading consisted of social media posts, text messages, and news headlines, I realized that I was missing out.

Missing out on the world’s grandest adventure of all – reading a book!

One of my favorite things about books is how they can take me places I might not ordinarily go.  Through the pages of a book, I have hiked to the top of Mt. Everest, traveled the length and breadth of China, survived the perils of Mars, and roamed the halls of Hogwarts.

When I read a book it ignites my soul, fuels my imagination, and broadens the scope of my horizons. Even thinking about reading a book is a marvelous reminder of all the amazing adventures that await at the turn of a page.

As one of my favorite authors (Dr. Suess) has said: “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you will go.”

Each day that I look into my Little Free Library, I smile. Books have been borrowed and books have been left.

My Reads From the Reds: My Little Free Library is succeeding in reaching its goal of bringing the RV community together over books.

  • Hey Kathy,

Wow, another great story from your golfing adventures.

Love the “Little Free Library.” Brilliant! Although I wouldn’t be interested in reading most of your golfing books, I still love to hold a book in my hand and read until my heart is content. I think reading and literacy is so important.

    Enjoy!!!!
    Love ya,
