18 Holes and Counting!

Our Love Affair with Golf!

“My Favorite Golf Course”

This month my golfing partner and I celebrate our 33rd Wedding Anniversary.  Routinely we try and play a round of golf at a special course in honor of our day.  However, this year COVID-19 has certainly limited our options. So…..we chose to celebrate our day at A.C. Read Golf Course on NAS Pensacola.

Often times I am asked what has been my most favorite course to play, which I find is a very hard question to answer.  I’ve been very lucky to play some wonderful golf courses throughout the years.

On our 20th Wedding Anniversary we played the track at Princeville Makai Golf Club on the Hawaiian island of Kauai.

We celebrated our 25th Wedding Anniversary with a round of a lifetime at the birthplace of golfThe Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland.

And for our 30th Wedding Anniversary we played the links at Old Head Golf in Kinsale, Ireland.

Each of those courses is special and playing them was more emotional for me than anything else.  Honestly, I am not much of a thinker on all things golf architecture when considering my favorite course.

My criteria for whether I like a golf course is pretty simple and can be summed up in one word:

FUN!

Was the course fun to play? How much fun did I have playing the course?  Was there a lot of variety?  Was each hole distinct and kept me entertained throughout the round?

I am NOT a low-handicapped golfer.  I can’t tee up my Titleist and drive it straight down the fairway on a consistent basis.  And I certainly can’t pitch from a dreaded sand trap onto the green with any degree of acquired skill.

In fact, I refer to myself as a “Hacker” golfer!

I freely take mulligans and gimmes, and I top the ball too many times. But one thing is certain –

I have fun when I play!

With endless choices to play golf throughout the country, we are getting ready to begin the FGA Tour (Festa Golf America) across the U.S.   As I write this, we are in the middle of loading up our RV, packing up our home and getting ready to hit the open road.

We are on a quest to have some fun playing golf!!

I mean after all – that’s what golf is supposed to be about right?  Having fun?

If it isn’t fun, why play?

  • HI Kathy and Mark
I totally agree “If it isn’t fun, why play?” I have been playing for 30 years I thought, until my family reminded me that I have been playing for 50 years!!! I go out every round thinking it is going to be my best but I must have had fun or I wouldn’t still be playing! May you have many more years together playing golf and having fun! That’s what the game is about!!!!!!
